| Austell is located at 33°48′57″N, 84°38′10″W (33.815905, -84.636242)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.8 km² (5.7 mi²). 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.18% is water. As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 5,359 people, 2,009 households, and 1,386 families residing in the city. The population density was 363.6/km² (942.1/mi²). There were 2,144 housing units at an average density of 145.5/km² (376.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 65.42% White, 24.58% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 6.40% from other races, and 2.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.07% of the population. There were 2,009 households out of which 35.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were married couples living together, 18.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% were non-families. 24.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.15. In the city the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 37.0% from 25 to 44, 17.8% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.4 males.
